If you’re in a hurry or on-the-go, this may lead you to make last-minute unhealthy snack choices — but it doesn’t have to be that way. You don’t have to eat junk food just because you’re short for time — there are plenty of healthy alternatives. Here’s seven simple and healthy on-the-go snack ideas:
1. Fruit
Fresh fruit is the obvious go-to healthy snack. It’s full of fibre, vitamins and minerals that help keep your immune system happy and healthy. This means that snacking on fruit will leave you feeling good and full of energy. Eating fruit is also the healthiest way to satisfy your sweet tooth — it’s known as nature’s candy for a reason!
2. Nuts
Loaded with nutrients, including healthy fats and protein, nuts keep you full and satisfied for a long time. Personally, I love snacking on almonds, which have countless health benefits. Consuming them can help lower cholesterol levels, assist with blood sugar control, protect your cell membranes, and much more.
3. Granola Bars
Granola bars are a nutritious and flavoursome snack option, but some of the shop-bought versions aren’t filled with the best ingredients. Go with a bar that offers more fibre and is sweetened naturally (such as with honey) rather than added sugars. If you want to ensure that your granola bar is filled with fresh, wholesome ingredients, then you could always make your own.
4. Smoothies
As they are so quick and easy to prepare, smoothies make an ideal on-the-go snack. The best thing is the fact that you’ll never get bored of them! Just switch the fruit and veg you use each time for a different flavour. I’m a big smoothie lover and have shared some of my favourite recipes on here.
5. Vegetables
Carrots, bell peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes are just a few of the veggies that you can snack on throughout the day. They’re full of antioxidants and their high water content can help you stay hydrated. If you need some added flavour, why not bring your favourite healthy dipping sauce?
6. Pita Bread and Hummus
Grab some wholewheat pita bread and spread some hummus onto it for a healthy snack. Made from ground chickpeas, hummus is a tasty way to get your fibre. It will keep you fuelled for hours!
7. Popcorn
Popcorn can be a very healthy snack depending on how it’s prepared. Of course, we all know that most of the shop-bought kind doesn’t contain the healthiest ingredients. For that reason, it’s best to air-pop your own so you know exactly what’s in it. Sprinkle a little sea salt as your topping or get creative and try different spices for more flavour.
I’d love to know if you have any healthy on-the-go snack ideas of your own.
