How to Find Your Passion When You Have No Idea What It Is

How to Find Your Passion When You Have No Idea What It IsFinding your passion in life doesn’t always come easy. Although some of us discover our passion during childhood, others have to actively go and search for theirs. Even though it can take time, pursuing your passion is incredibly rewarding and can transform your life. You’ll allow yourself to truly come alive, be your authentic self and live a fulfilled, purposeful life. But, what should you do if you don’t have a passion? Today, I’m sharing some tips on how to find your passion when you have no idea what it is.

1. Brainstorm Ideas in a Journal

I recommend exploring your thoughts in a journal as the first step to finding your passion. Taking the time to journal will set you free from distractions and give you the necessary time to think. Use these 5 prompts to help you:

– What drives you? What brings you a sense of fulfilment?
– What activities make you lose track of time when you’re doing them?
– What were the things you loved to do as a kid?
– What are you naturally good at?
– How do you bring value to people’s lives?

These questions can help you figure out what you might be passionate about. Don’t worry about writing down too many ideas as you’ll be evaluating them later.

2. Explore and Try New Things

Now that you have your list of ideas — it’s time to explore them! Yes, it may take a while, but it’s important to try everything on your list. At this stage, you can start off by taking small actions. Is “cooking” on your list? Perhaps, you could learn new recipes to try out, or even start your own food blog. Is “drawing” something you used to spend hours doing as a kid? It’s time to get out the colouring pencils. By exploring your interests further and trying new things, you’ll be able to learn a lot about yourself and what motivates you in life. And, I promise you — eventually, you’ll find your passion.

3. Don’t Be Afraid

There are many people who are too afraid to go after their passions. For you to really chase your dreams, you need to take the bold step of confronting your fears. It’s way too easy to tell yourself that you’ll pursue your passion when you have more time or more money, but the truth is — that time will never come. Once you realise that these excuses are down to fear, you’ll be able to push past them and progress. The best time to start is now!

4. Should Your Passion Be Your Career?

Once you’ve found your passion, the big question you may have to face is: should you make your passion your career? There’s a huge amount of pressure to make your passions into businesses or side-hustles. Although it can feel amazing to have a career that matches your passion — it’s not for everyone. In fact, for some people, their passion fizzles when it becomes work. Your passion doesn’t have to be a money-making opportunity. It can just be a creative outlet for you and that’s completely okay.

5. Remember: You Can be Multi-Passionate!

I know this post is all about “finding your passion,” but it’s important to remember that you can have multiple passions. You don’t have to fit yourself into a box and limit yourself. Often times, there may even be a way to bring your passions together. As a young child, I filled up countless journals and I still do to this day. I can’t imagine not being a writer. However, I have other passions too and write about them here on this site, bringing them all together. There’s so many creative ways to bring your passions together.

So those are my best ideas on how to find your passion. Have you figured out your passion in life? Let me know in the comments!

This is a really helpful post for many. For me, I have found out that my passion is writing. I have always dreamed of publishing a book. However, my biggest obstacle is finding enough quiet time to sit down and actually write. I have drafts written but have not completed any. I should start working on it before the year ends.

    1. Thank you, Kristine! Yes, it can be very hard to find the time for the things we’re passionate about. That’s a great idea — definitely try to schedule some time to work on your book. Good luck!

  4. Hi Telina.
Your article is insightful. Unfortunately, in most cases, its too late before we realize that we can or should pursue a certain path. Our passion is mostly last on the list of “must pursue”. I wish I had followed my passion in creativity when I was younger – I was constantly reminded that it was a time waster. With no formal education, I still pursued it at 30 – thanks to support from my husband. I am so glad it is a part of my life today. It opened avenues to a whole new realm which I NEVER realize ever existed.
