Alanya: A Coastal City in Turkey

Last month, I visited Alanya — a vibrant city situated on Turkey’s southern coast and in the Antalya province. It offers a blend of rich history, beautiful scenery, and attractions.

Alanya has an interesting history. The city was an important Roman outpost and later a fortified stronghold during the Byzantine and Seljuk periods. Alanya is known for its castle, which sits high on a rocky peninsula. The wall which surrounds the castle is 6.5km long and includes 140 towers.

The city is home to some of the most beautiful stretches of sand in Turkey. Whether you’re planning to relax in the sun, or try paragliding — Alanya’s beaches have something to offer for everyone. If you do plan to spend a lot of time at the beach, be mindful of the heat. The weather can get extremely hot during July and August, with temperatures close to 40°C — so don’t forget to stay hydrated and pack your suncream. It may be better to visit in April or May for less intense heat.

Beyond the beaches, if you’re looking for places to visit — you’ll find lots of clothes shops/bazaars as well as restaurants offering Turkish specialties like kebabs, mezes, and baklava. There are many excursions to try — canyon visits, boat tours, jeep safari trips, and much more. With so many options, you’ll be sure to find something that interests you.

A lovely aspect of Alanya is its population of cats. The city is well known for its many friendly cats and kittens that roam freely. I loved to see how the locals look out for them by leaving them fresh water and food. Definitely a city of cat lovers!

Check out some of the snaps from my Alanya trip below:

Have you visited Alanya or Turkey before? I’d love to know what you thought.
