On a recent day trip, we visited Windsor Castle, situated in the charming town of Windsor. It’s the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world as it’s still very much a working royal residence. On the day I visited, it was a very hot sunny day, which was lovely for photos, but we definitely had to seek out shade when we could!

We were not allowed to take pictures inside, which is why I’ve only featured pictures of the grounds. As you walk through the gates, you’ll see the castle, cobbled paths, stone walls, and beautifully kept gardens as you walk around.

Our first stop was St George’s Chapel, which was founded in the 14th century by King Edward III. As we wandered through the chapel, it immediately felt familiar and brought my mind back to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding that took place there in 2018. The chapel itself is very beautiful with its Gothic-style architecture, high vaulted ceilings, stone carvings, and stained glass windows. Several monarchs are buried in the chapel, including Queen Elizabeth II.

The state apartments were also very interesting to see. They were originally created for Charles II in the 1600s and later transformed by George IV. The rooms have hosted monarchs, dignitaries, and more for centuries. All of the state rooms were very grand with extravagant detailing, from gold gilded walls, large chandeliers, and artwork reflecting different periods and styles. When you visit, you’ll be able to view Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, The Grand Reception, and lots more.

At Windsor Castle, you may also witness the changing of the guards ceremony if you get there in time. Even if you don’t catch the full ceremony, you may spot the guards on patrol or in smaller formation, as I did, which offers a glimpse into the castle’s living traditions.
Whether you’re also from the UK, or you’re planning a trip here, I would recommend visiting Windsor Castle. You’ll especially enjoy it if you have an interest in history and architecture. It’s open to the public for most of the year, and makes a great day out.
