Ever since I was a child, I have loved reading. It’s one of my favourite ways to unwind; there’s nothing better than getting lost in a good book. I love how reading allows you to use your imagination and escape into another world for a while.
I have mentioned books I’ve enjoyed reading in a few monthly favourites posts in the past, but I’ve decided that I want to start posting book reviews on here – so this one’s the first! I’m reviewing “The Rosie Project” by Graeme Simsion.
From the very start, the novel suggests that there is something different about the protagonist. Don Tillman, a professor of genetics, has undiagnosed Asperger’s Syndrome. Everyone around him seems to be aware of this, but Don has no idea that he has the syndrome. Don is very stuck in his ways. He demonstrates obsessive compulsive behaviour as his whole life is scheduled down to the minute. He also expects every else to be as organised and as punctual as he is. When one of Don’s work colleagues asks him to wait a minute, he gets out his watch and starts counting down the seconds.
One thing that bothers Don is the fact that he does not have a life partner. Because of this, he comes up with the “The Wife Project,” an extremely detailed questionnaire designed to help find him the perfect partner and to filter out any unsuitable women. He believes it’s the most logical and efficient way to find that special someone missing from his life. Questions range from “Do you smoke?” to “Do you eat kidneys?” Although many women fill out the questionnaire, they all fail miserably and this leaves Don speculating whether there actually is someone out there for him.
And then he meets Rosie, a spontaneous, fun-loving woman who meets none of his strict requirements, leaving Don wondering why he can’t help but be drawn to her.
I found this novel so engaging that I couldn’t put it down! Because of this, it was a very quick read for me. I loved how it’s written in the first person; it really allows you to experience life through the eyes of Don and his unique way of looking at the world. It’s full of humour; Don’s quirky personality along with his dry wit and sarcasm left me in stitches at times. Another aspect I enjoyed was the love angle in the story – if you love a romantic comedy then I’m sure you’ll love reading this!
Would I recommend this novel? Yes! It’s hilarious, heart warming and moving. I give it a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
