The harsh winter weather can take a toll on your skin and leave it feeling dry, itchy and irritated. Thankfully, there are ways to combat this and keep your skin feeling and looking healthy and moisturised throughout the whole season. Here are some tips and tricks on how to take care of your skin in winter:
1. Choose the Right Moisturiser
The products you use in the warmer months may not work for you during the winter season. So, depending on your skin type, you may need to change your moisturiser and switch up your skincare routine. If you usually use a light lotion or serum on your face, then you may need to shift to a heavier moisturiser in winter. Don’t forget about your body lotions! I like to use creamy and rich body butters, such as this Weleda body butter, to keep my skin soft and moisturised.
2. Use a Gentle Cleanser
It’s a good idea to change your regular body wash and facial cleanser in winter, especially if your usuals contain drying ingredients such as alcohol or added fragrances that will strip away your skin’s natural oils. Look out for cleansers that are “fragrance-free” and use natural moisturising ingredients such as nourishing oils. I like Indie Lee’s Brightening Cleanser as it’s moisturising and gently cleanses your skin without drying it out.
3. Remember to Exfoliate
If your skin has dead skin cells on the surface, it will have a hard time absorbing products. Exfoliating during the cooler months will help your skincare products absorb into your skin deeper and make them work a lot more effectively. There’s no need to exfoliate more than once or twice a week. Why not try this natural exfoliator by Sukin? It’s made with rosehip seeds, walnut shell, quandong, camellia and essential fatty acids. Your skin will thank you!
4. Drink Enough Water
During the colder months, it can be very easy to forget to drink enough water. However, staying hydrated is one of the best things you can do for your skin. This is because water delivers essential nutrients to your skin cells and helps maintain the moisture in your skin, leaving you with a healthy complexion. Struggle with remembering to drink enough water? Here’s some tips on how to drink more water every day.
5. Run a Humidifier
To counter the drying effects of the cold winter air and indoor heating systems, humidifiers are a great solution. Adding a humidifier to your home restores the moisture in the air. This will help stop your skin from drying out and will help keep it hydrated. Place the humidifier in the room that you spend the most time in, or place it in your bedroom and switch it on overnight. I’ve recently bought this humidifier and I find it really effective.
