5 Days in Vienna, Austria

Earlier this month, my partner and I travelled to Vienna, Austria — a stunning city known for its culture, music, and history. We spent five days in Vienna and fell in love with Austria’s capital.

We chose a hotel in the heart of Vienna, which was very ideal. It was close to Mariahilfer Straße, Vienna’s main shopping street. Stretching for almost 2 kilometers, it runs between the Museum Quartier and Westbahnhof. It has popular international shops such as H&M, Zara, Dr. Martens, Nike, as well as local boutiques, cafés, restaurants, souvenir shops and bookstores. It was nice to stroll down this street — there is definitely something for everyone.

Like we did in Berlin, we decided to go on a Big Bus tour, which allows you to “hop on and hop off” at different attractions while you ride the bus through Vienna. You get informative audio commentary, which provides you with interesting information about landmarks as you pass by. We chose to do both the red and blue routes, which gave us a perfect mix of Vienna’s history. The red line was the “city route” and the blue was the “palace route.”

We got to see a vast amount of popular attractions including the State Opera House (Vienna is known for being the city of classical music and where Mozart composed many of his famous works), Hofburg Palace, Schönbrunn Palace, Belvedere Palace, the Parliament Building, and St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Each stop offers something unique, giving you a full picture of Vienna’s charm and history. Also on the route is the MuseumsQuartier, a creative hub filled with art museums, galleries, and beautiful architecture.

One of my favourite things we did in Vienna was going up the Danube Tower, which is Vienna’s tallest structure at 252 meters. A high-speed elevator takes you up to the observation deck, where you’re greeted with panoramic views of the city, the Danube River, and the amazing scenery. It was truly stunning – the perfect spot to see an overview of Vienna. At the top, there’s also a rotating café and restaurant. We enjoyed coffee and cake while taking in the breathtaking views. If you’re fine with heights — I would highly recommend this!

In addition to seeing the landmarks, we also got to explore some of the restaurants and cafes in Vienna. The city’s signature dish is Wiener Schnitzel — which is breaded veal or pork. We enjoyed trying popular Viennese dessert, Kaiserschmarrn, a fluffy, shredded pancake that is served with various toppings such as like apple sauce, plum, or berries. Very nice!

All in all, we had a wonderful time in Vienna and we hope to return again at some point. It’s a wonderful city full of culture and elegance with lots to see and do.
